Government in Sports & Youth Services Department has instituted the Biju Patnaik Award for Outstanding Performance in Promotion of Sports & Games  since 2001-2002. This is the highest honour of Government of Orissa conferred on distinguished Sports Persons/Coaches/Sports Journalists of the State in recognition and appreciation of the outstanding performance and contribution made by such persons for promotion of sports & games.

Instituted in the name of Legendary Statesman and eminent Sports Person Late Biju Patnaik this annual award is conferred in 4 categories (Life Time Achievement,  Sportsman of the Current year, Outstanding Coach, Outstanding Sports Journalist). The details of the Award is indicated below:
