Amanat Kamboj sets NMR in National Junior athletics inaugural day

Bhubaneswar : The 17-year-old Amanat Kamboj of Punjab set the tune of the 39th National Junior Athletics Championship 2024, by rewriting a New Meet Record (NMR) in the Women’s U-18 discus event with a personal best throw of 52.89m at Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday. Earlier she bagged an Asian under-20 silver in discus with a personal best of 50.45m.
She created the NMR by wiping out Navjeet Kaur Dhillon’s (49.54m) record set at Lucknow in the year 2012.
Riddhi and Supriya Attri from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh bagged the silver and bronze medal with a throw of 48.80 and 46.57 m respectively.
The presence of Asian under-20 gold and silver medallists Deepanshu Sharma (Personal Best: 71.21m) and Rohan Yadav (PB 70.03m) in the men’s category and National Open bronze medallist Deepika (PB 55.23m) will make the Javelin event more competitive.
All eyes will be on local athlete Sabita Toppo in the 100m hurdler event, as she won silver medal in the South Asian junior championships.
To motivate the local athletes, Odisha’s ace sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick announced that apart from Reliance Odisha High Performance Centre (HPC) athletes who will won a gold medal will receive a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and any athlete from Odisha contingent will set a New Record will get Rs 15,000 from his side”. .
